From the moment i set foot on the grounds of HGSS i KNEW i wz gonna h8 it. The early hours of the morning find Nicky Taylor, 39, stumbling around the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub, clutching a bottle of Smirnoff Ice. In the past five hours, she has consumed the equivalent of four bottles of wine in a potentially deadly mix of cocktails, spirits, beers and numerous shots. Now she is drunk. She has already vomited once - but stumbling out from the Ladies, Nicky carries on drinking, determined to keep up with her female companions who return to the bar for round after round.
This unedifying scene is not a typical night out for Nicky. A single mother from Kidderminster, she prefers to spend her evenings in front of the television while her three children, Freya, seven, Millie, six, and Harry, four, sleep upstairs. But in an extraordinary experiment for the BBC, Nicky spent a month socialising with binge-drinkers and matching them drink for drink to see what this does to the body and mind. Over 30 days, going out five nights a week, Nicky consumed a staggering 516 units of alcohol - 17.2 units a day. Government guidelines say women should drink no more than two or three units a day, and a maximum of 14 a week (one unit equals one small glass of wine). She hopes her experiment will open people's eyes to the gravity of the binge-drinking epidemic in the same way Morgan Spurlock's film Super Size Me (in which the American film-maker ate nothing but McDonald's for 30 days) did to the dangers of junk food. Nicky's experiences certainly add to concerns about the 24-hour drinking laws. So far, more than 70,000 premises have extended their opening hours.
